Earthquake
ruin, Aum gas attacks, runs on banks and housing loan scans.
The horror of 1995 kept coming, blurring the boundary between
fact and fiction. The wave of violence enveloped me too : an
encounter with Oliver Stone...fallout with John Lone...defending
against(and winning)a groundless lawsuit...spousal revolt...separation...single-fatherhood...
No escape from the crashing wave : the days passed, like a hurricane
and the eye of the storm, like Miles Davis' electric 70's sound.
THAT IS. THAT'S THE SOUND ! Suddenly, the thrilling, enigmatic
beauty of Miles' chaotic world is revealed.
Then soon, a chance to record the sound in my head for Katsutomo
Otomo's new soundtrack, "MEMORIES." After the session, the smiles of musicians
gave me confidence. Time had come to reconstruct THE sound −
the sound of our youth. With deepest respect, I set out to stack
up artifacts avove the sound, areating a hybrid. I located a
vintage Fender Rhodes, wrote 10 songs, hired a lyricist, recorded
a demo and assembled the best musicians. After two days of rehearsals,
concert day came − October 5. That evening, flying above the
concert space, the sound of a helicopter broadcasting scenes
of an Aum leader's arrest blessed the concert with an air of
inevitability. It was an evening that, at the very least, repainted
my musical histry.
This recording was made spontaneously as a favor by Takehiko
Kamada. My thanks to his dedication and deepest respect for 10
great musicians who came through on the spot to play for their
youth.
